Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Vehicle Use?
Nissan has used several different key and security technologies over the decades, and identifying the right one is the first step toward getting you back on the road. Pre-2000 Nissan vehicles typically use a basic metal-cut key with no electronics. From the early 2000s onward, most Nissans shipped with a transponder chip embedded in the key head — the immobilizer in the car's ECU sends a radio-frequency challenge to the chip every time you turn the ignition, and if the chip doesn't respond with the correct rolling code, the engine won't start even with a perfectly cut blade. Replacing a transponder key means both cutting the blade to the correct key code and programming the chip to your specific vehicle, which our technicians handle with professional-grade diagnostic tools right at your location.
Later Nissan models — including many Rogue, Murano, Maxima, and Altima trims from the mid-2010s onward — use Nissan's Intelligent Key system. This is a proximity-based smart key that allows push-button starting and passive door unlocking without inserting anything into the ignition. Smart keys require OBDII-level programming that reads your car's existing key data, and because the Intelligent Key system is particularly sensitive to cloning errors, the process must be done with the right equipment. We carry that equipment in our mobile service vehicle. Whether you need a single replacement or want a spare programmed so you're never caught off-guard again, we handle the full job on-site.
